Spiral Wound Gaskets
Spiral Wound GasketsWith the ability to withstand harsh conditions without losing integrity, Spiral Wound Gaskets are increasingly utilized in the sealing industry. At Blaylock Gasket & Packing, we are proud to offer high quality standard Spiral Wound Gaskets and specially engineered Spiral Wound solutions.
Whether you need a simple crush gasket or a gasket with inner and outer rings, BG&P is your source. Durable materials, from the ring to the filler, and ease of installation make Spiral Wounds a revolutionary sealing product. Whether your flange is in the oil patch or on the assembly line, let our team help you find a Spiral Wound gasket solution. Blaylock Spiral Wounds meet the stringent standards of ASME B16.20.
When to use Spiral Wound Gaskets
Spiral wounds are used across a variety of sealing sectors. The oil and gas industry frequently uses spiral wounds in pipelines, refineries and chemical storage. In realty, if an environment has any of the below parameters, a spiral wound gasket may be ideal
- Extremely elevated temperatures
- High pressure
- Corrosive chemical applications
- Irregular sealing surfaces
What is a Spiral Wound
Spiral wound gaskets are made up of three key components:
Winding: The winding of spiral wound is a series of tightly-wound metallic strips. These strips (along with the winding below) compress to create the sealing surface. Blaylock’s most common windings include 304SS, 316SS and Monel ®. These windings are in the form of a V-shape.
Filler: The filler in any metallic gasket, including spiral wounds is the softer substance that often compresses to seal. In surrounds or fills in the gaps between windings. These materials are still dense and hard so an application where minimal sealing pressure is available may exclude the use of a spiral wound. Common fillers include: graphite, PTFE, non-asbestos and more. Graphite is overwhelmingly Blaylock’s most commonly used filler.
Outer Rings: Some spiral wounds use only winding and filler, but most have at least an outer ring. The outer ring is often called a centering or guide ring as well. Outer rings help position spiral wounds and hold the gasket together. They encircle the outside of the sealing element (winding and filler). Carbon steel is our most popular outer ring material.
Inner Rings: Simply put, inner rings add stability, running inside the inner diameter of the sealing element. Inner rings are a good idea on large spiral wound gaskets. Our most common inner ring materials are 304 and 316SS.

Blaylock Spiral Wound Styles
Blaylock offers a wide assortment of spiral wound products, each of which can be customized to your project and needs. Fillers, windings, inner rings and outer rings can all be mixed to your ideal application. Plus, most of our spiral wounds can be made in the USA if needed.
STANDARD SPIRAL WOUNDS: Our standard industrial spiral wounds are available in pressure classes from 150# all the way up to 2500# with and without inner rings and to the size and specifications of ASME B16.20.
FULL FACE SPIRAL WOUNDS: We can make full face ASME B16.20 to ANSI flange dimensions or custom bolt patterns. Bolt holes are expertly cut in the outer ring to fit full and flat face flanges. They can be made with your choice of winding, filler and ring material.
WINDING-ONLY CRUSH GASKETS: These gaskets feature only the winding and filler, with no inner or outer ring. A popular choice for DPF or diesel filter gaskets. They are mainly used in tongue and groove or male and female. They are also used in equipment with space and weight limitations.
DOMESTIC SPIRAL WOUNDS: Blaylock offers two levels of domestic spiral wounds.
- DOMESTIC RAW: Made in the USA with US -Sourced Materials
- DOMESTIC MADE: Made in the USA with both domestic and import components
HF SPIRAL WOUNDS: This specialty spiral wound is designed for applications sealing hydrofluoric acid or with crevice corrosion concerns. A flexible graphite filler with expanded PTFE facing is standard, but other facings are available. This gasket features a camprofile Monel inner ring and can be made to custom sizes.
NON-CIRCULAR SPIRAL WOUNDS: These customizable gaskets can be made using customizable combinations of filler and winding (an inner ring is also a good idea on most con-circular spiral wounds). They can be oval, square or rectangular, among other shapes.
SPIRAL WOUNDS FOR OXYGEN SERVICE: Oxidation inhibitors are added to a high-purity graphite filler. Creating a gasket with parameters ideal for oxygen service.
