What is Belting?
Simply put, belting is a heavy-duty material for projects on the move. Every belt material is made up of several key components. When you inquire about a belting project, our team will want to know your preferences for the following:
- PLIES & FABRIC REINFORCEMENT: All belting materials are reinforced with a material like nylon or polyester to provide strength and toughness. We would need to know if you have a preference for ply material and how many layers of reinforcement are desired: 2ply, 4ply, etc. The reinforcement of belting are often referred to as the “carcass”. The carcass can be made from woven fabrics but also steel reinforcement.
- COVER: Belts also come with a cover to protect the carcass. The cover is often a protective layer of rubber on one or both sides of the belt. Covers are available in Nitrile, SBR, and other rubber materials. Some belts offer surfaces with cleats, grips, and other materials to reduce product movement.
- APPLICATION: Our team will want to know the environment in which you will be using your belting material.
- THICKNESS: Thin belts down below ¼’ are available, as are hulking 1” thick belting materials.
Types of Belting
There are thousands of belting materials out there. At the risk of oversimplification, there are two main types of belting material.
- HEAVYWEIGHT: These types of belts are often referenced by their weight and ply structure. Popular working wight classes include 220lb and 440lb.
- LIGHTWEIGHT: Lightweight belts are designed for moving products like foods where weight isn’t the main variable
