Cloth-Inserted Gasket
For nearly all of Blaylock’s rubber elastomeric materials, a version with some form of reinforcement is available. Reinforcing materials like fiberglass, nylon, cotton and polyester offer increased strength and dimensional stability. In addition to improved tensile strength, reinforced rubber materials offer enhanced durability – with resistance to ripping, tearing and stress. Some people also refer to reinforced rubber as cloth-insert.
Most reinforced materials come with 1-ply and 2-ply options – although higher ply numbers are available.
For heavy-duty applications, Blaylock is an industry leader in the reinforced belting market. No matter your application, our team is ready to help.
Reinforced Rubber FAQ
Simply put, reinforcement gives the rubber added strength. The biggest advantages are increased tear resistance and dimensional stability - which means the material is more likely to maintain its original shape and form.
Reinforced rubber materials are often categorized by plies or layers of fabric. Generally, the higher the number of plies, the greater stability offered.
Mullen burst is often used to measure the strength of a corrugated carboard box. But the test is often used on rubber materials to determine how much pressure the product can take before it fails.
Tensile strength measure how much pull or stretch a rubber material can endure before it fails. A rubber band would have low tensile strength, while and automotive belt would offer much greater tensile strength.
In a word, rubber diaphragms breathe, creating a seal between two distinct chambers. These special rubber materials are designed for dynamic applications.
Sometimes the reinforcing material may not respond well to the medium you are sealing or the environment. These materials also have way less stretch or elongation ability.
What type of Reinforced Materials are Available:
- NEOPRENE: We offer Neoprene with a standard 5oz nylon reinforcement – with one or two plies. Polyester and cotton reinforcements are also available.
- NEOPRENE DIAPHRAGM: This product excels in dynamic, non-static applications where movement is critical. Neoprene diaphragm offers higher Mullen burst test results and shows superior flexing properties.
- NITRILE: Ideal for applications like fuel pumps where oil resistance is key. Suitable for select diaphragm applications. Our commercial Nitrile is reinforced with Nylon.
- NITRILE DIAPHRAGM: Used in non-static, select diaphragm applications, especially if oil resistance is required.
- EPDM: Our commercial EPDM with a 5oz nylon reinforcement. Ideal for outdoor applications and select chemicals.
- SILICONE: Blaylock offers a commercial fiberglass reinforced silicone and spec grade fiberglass silicone per AMS 3320-H. The fiberglass reinforcement maintains high-heat resistance, just like silicone.
- VITON®: Our A-style Viton® with an added fiberglass reinforcement. We also offer special fabric coated Viton® materials with Nomex.
- SBR: An economic sub for natural rubber. A general-purpose SBR rubber reinforced with a 5oz Nylon for dimensional stability.
