NSF 61 Standards for Drinking Water Systems
The standard known as NSF/ANSI 61 establishes requirements for controlling the chemical contaminants and impurities released into drinking water by its systems. NSF 61 does not relate to water taste, odor, or microbial contamination.
Materials that come into contact with drinking water or that could potentially contaminate it are covered by NSF standards. Some water system components regulated by NSF 61 include:

NSF 61 Materials

- NSF 61 EPDM: Our fabric finish EPDM is ideal for outdoor applications and can be found at water treatment plants coast to coast.
- NSF 61 SANTOPRENE: White rubber sheet available in sheets, tapes and cut parts
- NSF 61 O-RINGS: Our team can provide EPDM, Viton®, Buna and Silicone O-rings that are NSF 61 Rated.
- NSF 61 RESTRUCTURED PTFE: This superior sheet is highly compressible and able to tackle aggressive media – all while being ideal for stress-sensitive or fragile flanges.
- NSF 61 COMPRESSED FIBER SHEET: This sheet can handle temperatures up to 500F continuous and 750F peaks. A high-temp star in the NSF 61 world.
- NSF 61 MECHANICAL PACKING: This exceptional packing uses ultra-pure expanded PTFE and a unique food-grade lubricant that meets NSF 61 standards. Handles 0-14 pH range in the process.
NSF 61 Potable Water Gaskets
While the Food and Drug Administration does not directly certify gaskets, it does certify gasket materials. Blaylock Gasket & Packing utilizes several FDA-certified materials to make food-grade gaskets, including our NSF-61 gaskets for potable water systems.
We make NSF 61 potable water gaskets from materials that meet the standard for leaching of lead, VOCs, and other chemicals. The NSF symbol indicates that all gaskets leach any contaminants below established safe levels.
Other considerations depend on the specific application you need gaskets for. For example, you may need drinking water gasket materials that have chemical or extreme temperature resistance. Silicone, nitrile, and ethylene propylene diene monomer are common gasket materials certified under NSF 61.
