The most common stainless material for industrial gaskets, 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It has a high corrosion resistance and is suitable for working temperatures up to 790 degrees, although it can handle higher temperatures up to 1400 degrees for short periods. Stainless 304 is a widely available, low-cost gasket material option.

Similar to stainless 304, 304L has a lower maximum carbon content of 0.03%. This gives it a better tolerance to high temperatures. Gaskets and seals made from AISI 304L have a continuous operational limit of 1400 degrees, however, they may experience stress corrosion. Stainless steel 304 and 304L gaskets are commonly used in industrial food processing equipment and medical equipment.

This stainless alloy contains 18% nickel, 13% chromium, and 2% molybdenum. These provide very high corrosion resistance. It is suitable for operating temperatures up to 1400 degrees.

Stainless 316L is chemically similar to 316, but it contains no more than 0.03% carbon. This reduces some complications that users may experience with stainless 316 at higher temperatures.

Common uses for stainless 316 gaskets and seals include medical equipment and chemical processing equipment. They are also suitable for water heaters.

This stainless variation contains Austenitic stainless steel alloy with 18% chromium and 10% nickel. It also has titanium, which reduces internal corrosion. Stainless 321 tolerates temperatures up to 1500 degrees. Gaskets and seals in heat exchangers, aircraft engines, industrial furnaces, and refinery equipment may use stainless 321.

Stainless steel 347 is very similar to 304; however, it includes trace amounts of cobalt and tantalum to help stabilize its structure. It performs well at high temperatures up to 1550 degrees but is subject to stress corrosion. Stainless 347 steel shims and gasket material are suitable for pressure vessels, chemical processing, and food processing operations.
