Materials Used for Seals & Gaskets in the Energy Sector

Our seals and gaskets for the energy industry are crafted from a variety of durable materials specifically chosen for their resistance to harsh conditions and chemicals. Due to the harsh nature of their use environments, these materials are usually highly resistant to oils and many chemicals. Some common materials we use to manufacture products for the energy sector include:

  • Buna Rubber: Sometimes called nitrile rubber, Buna resists many chemicals and fuels, making it an ideal choice for gaskets in the energy industry. It can also withstand temperature swings between -40 and 250 degrees and will operate temporarily at temperatures above that range.
  • Cork: Cork is a sustainable material that is resistant to gas and diesel fuels. It is a popular choice for gaskets in the energy sector either alone or combined with rubber, neoprene, or nitrile.
  • DuPont Viton®: A synthetic material developed by the DuPont corporation, Viton® is flexible, durable, and adaptable to a wide range of temperatures. There are three grades of Viton® rated according to their fluorine content. All are resistant to chemicals and fuels. We carry DuPont Viton® gaskets, extrusions, sponges, and O-rings.

Other materials are also available, including silicone and metallic gaskets. We carry non-asbestos sheet material to manufacture gaskets with excellent chemical and fuel resistance.

Spiral-wound gaskets use a combination of metallic and non-metallic components. They typically have an outer guide ring and softer filler material. We make spiral-wound gaskets in 913, 913M, 911, 911T, 911M, and 914 styles.

Energy Sector Applications for Gaskets and Seals

Gaskets and seals are used in virtually every aspect of the energy industry. You will find them from oilfields to refineries to within wind turbines. Some common energy sector applications for our gaskets include oil extraction and refining, petrochemical processing, and renewable energy production.

The oil and gas industry relies on gaskets at every step. Gaskets and seals ensure fluids remain in pipelines, pumps, and valves. They are found in the field and refining operations. Power plants also rely on seals to ensure the proper functioning of equipment such as reactors, heat exchangers, and wind turbines.
